You don’t have to have theatrical experience to become a member of New Plymouth Little Theatre – in fact you don’t need to act at all if you are more interested in other things. We try to provide a range of advantages and opportunities to members, depending on their needs, and to play an important part in the local community.
We are happy to welcome people who simply wish to meet new friends and enjoy the social life and, perhaps, to support the society’s productions. Most social events take place in the workshop, but we do other things, including club nights, and theatre trips.
We can help you to learn and improve your acting or technical skills, through workshop and training activities, or by teaming you up with an experienced person who can coach you. Our workshop productions are a particularly good way for newcomers to learn and try out their skills in a friendly, low “risk” environment.
We can offer excellent opportunities to use your existing acting abilities. Not everyone wants to take a leading role, but New Plymouth Little Theatre can offer acting opportunities to everyone from raw beginners to experienced professionals. If you have musical talents you will also be very welcome. New Plymouth Little Theatre productions are normally cast by auditions. If you are slightly nervous about that, even highly experienced actors sometimes have problems when reading a piece aloud for the first time, so please don’t think you have to be perfect.
New Plymouth Little Theatre is a registered charity and we like to play our part in the community. We achieve that, of course, by providing opportunities for people to develop their skills and find friendship, and by providing good quality theatre at modest prices. Over our long history, however, we have done more than that. We often provide free entertainment for community groups, residential care establishments, churches, etc. We hope this brief description has developed your interest in becoming a member.
You can give tremendous support to the society using your existing knowledge and skills. Anyone who can wield a paintbrush or a screwdriver is welcome, as are those with sewing, carpentry and electrical skills. There is also administrative work to be done. In fact there are opportunities for anyone who wishes to join and help.
We welcome new members who have already directed or wish to direct. Our Committee will discuss with you whether you should aim to direct a major New Plymouth Little Theatre production, whether you should set your sights on a One Act production first, or act as a production manager, supporting an experienced director.
