Somewhere in New Zealand in the early 1980’s a group of women (and one man) attend a weekly tap dance class in a dingy church hall.
During a time span of approximately five months we follow the lives, laughs and loves of ex-professional dancer Mavis who runs the class, cheerful overweight Sylvia, Andy – a plain do-gooder with no confidence, snobby well-meaning Vera, timid Dorothy who works in Social Security, attractive sharp and shrewd Maxine, young earnest Lynne (a first year nurse), Rose – self styled “odd woman out”, Geoffrey the lone male and accompanist Glenda Frazer.
How effective are the tap lessons? Will this group be transformed into twinkle toed triumphant tappers in time for the Grand Charity Show performance?
